IPL Treatment for Dry Eye Relief

Intense Pulsed Light, also known as IPL, is a versatile type of light therapy that can be used to treat chronic dry eye caused by MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction). Sufferers of MGD experience chronic dry eye because the meibomian glands in the eyelids don’t make enough oil to prevent the evaporation of tears, resulting in a compromised tear film that cannot maintain normal levels of eye moisture. Ready to schedule an appointment? Click here to get in touch.

  • How does IPL work?

Controlled flashes of light are applied over the eyelids to gently stimulate and heat the Meibomian glands, which helps soften and melt the solidified oils that are causing blockages in the glands. This also works to decrease the eyelid inflammation and redness that often come with MGD and dry eyes.

IPL therapy is a quick procedure, usually taking no more than 10 to 15 minutes per session. You will wear special eye pads and protective goggles, to ensure that your eyes are fully protected during treatment. You should experience some noticeable improvement after your first session. Most people will experience optimal results after 4 treatments over a 3 month period, though additional sessions may be recommended depending on the severity of your dry eye symptoms.

  • Who can have IPL?

IPL is an excellent treatment for most patients who are looking for long-lasting relief from chronic dry eye. However, you may be ineligible for IPL therapy if: you are a pregnant woman; you have very dark skin; you have moles, keloid scars, birthmarks, or tattoos near your eyelids; you have a fake tan; you have an autoimmune skin condition or some other skin condition that makes you hyper sensitive to UV rays; you have undergone medical procedures (collagen injection, dermabrasion, etc) or are taking medications that increase your skin’s photo-sensitivity.

  • What are the advantages of IPL?

There are many reasons why IPL therapy is highly recommended for the treatment of chronic dry eye. It directly resolves the main cause of your dry eye symptoms and is gentler on your skin than laser. Other benefits of IPL include improved vision and ocular comfort, short treatment time at only 10 to 15 minutes per session, and a reduced need for pharmaceutical medications.

The treatment is overwhelmingly safe and generally painless. However, some minor and temporary side effects may occur, which can include: mild discomfort during treatment; tingling, inflammation, and redness on the treated area; mucus discharge; and lightened skin for darker-skinned patients. These adverse reactions should resolve themselves shortly after treatment. If your symptoms persist, however, you should contact your doctor right away.

If you are considering IPL therapy and would like to know if you are a good candidate for this innovative treatment, you can reserve a consultation by calling our medical office at (315) 637-1010 or by completing our online contact form.

BlephEx Certified Practice seal

BlephEx Procedure for Dry Eye Relief

Tucker Eye Care now offers BlephEx®, the first and only doctor eyelid cleaning procedure to help maintain clean and healthy lids. Watch the video and read the information below to learn more about this revolutionary treatment. Ready to schedule an appointment? Click here to get in touch.

  • What is BlephEx?

Over 50% of all patients suffer from some type of eyelid symptoms associated with insufficient eyelid hygiene. BlephEx® is a new, in-office procedure that allows your doctor to take an active role in cleaning your eyelid margins. The procedure removes excess bacteria, biofilm and bacterial toxins, the main causes of eyelid symptoms. BlephEx® cleans eyelids to maintain eyelid hygiene. With regular treatments, the eyelids stay clean and symptom-free. The BlephEx® treatment only takes a few minutes to perform.

  • How does BlephEx work?

BlephEx® is a painless in-office procedure performed by your eyecare professional or trained technician. A revolutionary new patented BlephEx® handpiece is used to very precisely spin a soft medical grade micro-sponge along the edge of your eyelids and lashes. This procedure effectively removes years of accumulated bacterial biofilm, much like a dental cleaning removes accumulated plaque, also a biofilm. Once the biofilm is removed, your eyelids are cleaner and healthier. A healthy eyelid is critical for normal tear production.

The patented micro-sponge is disposable and for optimal cleaning and exfoliating, a fresh clean one is used for each eye. The eyes are rinsed well afterwards.

The procedure lasts about 6 – 8 minutes. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. A numbing drop is usually placed in each eye prior to treatment for increased comfort.

After the procedure, you may resume normal activities. Home cleaning regimes can continue but are are only semi-effective. BlephEx® should be repeated every 4-6 months as determined by your eye doctor.

The sooner in life that BlephEx® is begun as a routine element of eye care, the better the long-term results. If you wait until you have symptoms before seeking treatment, much damage may already be done to your tear glands.

Treat your eyelids early, and treat often.

MiBo thermoflo procedure available at Tucker Eye Care

MiBo Thermoflo® for Instant Dry Eye Relief

Did you know that Tucker Eye Care is one of the only certified MiBo Termoflo providers in Upstate New York? The MiBo Thermoflo is a therapeutic medical device providing a safe and effective alternative therapy for dry eyes. It uses a proprietary thermoelectric heat pump to help maximize liquefaction of meibum, thus improving preservation and function of the evaporative component of the tear film.

  • How does MiBo Thermoflo work?

The MiBo Thermoflo supplies continuous controlled heat that is applied to the outer skin of the eyelids along with ultrasound gel for a gentle massage. The heat is absorbed deep into the tissue and breaks down the hardened lipids in the meibomian glands.

  • What results can patients expect from MiBo Thermoflo?

With a specifically prescribed therapy regimen, the ducts of the meibomian glands will secrete thinner and clearer lipids which will allow for a healthier tear film.

For best results, it is recommended doing three treatments two weeks apart. After evaluating the patients after the cycle of treatments, it may be determined that they require a fourth treatment. Most patients may go twelve months before requiring additional treatments, but some request frequent treatments for their comfort, due to daily eyestrain.

NuLids® for Easy, At-Home Dry Eye Treatment

NuLids™—now available at Tucker Eye Care—is a fast and effective at-home treatment for dry eyes. NuLids is a device specifically designed to reduce eye discomfort such as: itching, burning, redness, eyelid inflammation, crusting of eyelids, irritation, and/or a gritty sensation, etc. With just a few minutes a day, you can naturally treat these symptoms at home. Schedule an appointment today to find out if the NuLids system is right for you!

  • How does How does the NuLids System work?

The NuLids System works by gently and safely eliminating debris and stimulating the Meibomian glands...just like brushing your teeth near your gum line eliminates debris and stimulates your gums.

The Meibomian glands produce the oil layer of the tear film and oil deficiency is a primary cause of Dry Eye Disease in 86% of cases. The gentle massaging action of the NuLids Daily Disposable Tip is believed to stimulate capillary perfusion at the lid margins and contribute to better overall eyelid health.

  • What can the NuLids System do for you?

It is important to know that the NuLids System is not a cure for dry eye. But, when used daily as directed, the NuLids System can provide amazing results. In recent clinical studies, the NuLids System demonstrated an over 50% reduction in the discomfort and redness associated with dry eye. NuLids has also been shown to end or substantially reduce that dry, scratchy, gritty, itching, burning, and/or sandy feeling in the eye. And, with daily use, possibly eliminate the pain, soreness, redness, and heaviness of the eyelids often reported by sufferers.

NuLids has also been proven to increase the length of time a person’s tears work between blinks by 65% [known as tear film breakup time].

And, in these same clinical studies, the NuLids System was found to improve the secretion of important oils [called meibum] necessary for good tear film quality, comfort and health by an astounding 81%

  • Is the NuLids System easy to use?

The NuLids System is a small, hand-held rechargeable device that looks a lot like an electronic toothbrush. To use it, simply place a fresh sterile Soft Tip on the end of the unit and add some lubricating gel. When you turn the unit on, the Soft Tip will gently vibrate. Then, while the unit is on, place the Soft Tip at the edge of your eyelid, and slowly move the Soft Tip across your eyelid for approximately 30 seconds. Then, repeat the procedure for the other eyelid for 30 seconds, and you are done. It’s just that easy!

Ocular Allergy Diagnostic System (OADS)

Allergies are defined as your body's natural response to being exposed to substances called allergens.  This exposure can result in symptoms of itchiness, redness, and inflammation.  If you have problems with allergies, it is likely that your eyes are also affected.

At Tucker Eye Care, we offer FDA-approved, in-office diagnostic testing to determine if allergies are the underlying cause of your eye redness and irritation.  The test takes approximately 3 minutes to perform and is covered by many major insurance plans.  It does not involve needles or shots.  The test is administered using a plastic, skin-prick test applicator.
